During Writer's Workshop time we will encourage your child to use pictures and words to write their very own books! To start the school year, we will be working on personal narratives/true stories. We want your child to build confidence in their abilities to tell stories on their own, without someone telling them what to write, how to spell words, or how to draw. Because of this, please allow your child to try their best to sound things out on their own when they start adding words! At the beginning of the year, it is important to know that it is perfectly fine if your child is using only pictures to tell their story but remind them to take their time and use multiple colors to add detail. Please ask your child to tell you their story and encourage them to add details about who is in the story, where they are, and what is happening.
A writing folder was sent home with your student's materials; inside you will see an alphabet chart which can be used to help them sound words out and a name tracing page which can be used for an independent name practice activity. You will also notice red and green dot folders on the inside of the folder. The green side is where your child can keep a story they are still working on and the red is for finished stories. There are a few blank writing books in their folder but you can print more paper here or use any paper you have available to you at home!

Make sure that when you write that you are checking for everything a sentence needs.
