During math time we will work on building student's number recognition, counting skills, and problem solving skills. We will use counting collections, story problems, and other number activities to help them reach their learning goals!
Each week we will post a story problem on Seesaw; please see the tips below for allowing your child to work through these problems on their own. We also ask that you encourage your child to work with a counting collection every day (tips for that also found below).
Other ways to work with numbers: have them count orally by 1's, have them write their numbers 0-10 on their whiteboard, practice tracing numbers in their purple Math Journal.
Tips for Story Problems:
Encourage your child to work through the story problem on their own and in their own way. Try not to tell them how to solve it. Some students prefer drawing pictures and others prefer using objects. Ask your child to explain how they solved the problem and then guide them if needed.
Tips for Counting Collections:
A counting collection can be made using any items you have around the house. Give your child a bag or container of objects and ask them to count them. I do not tell them how they should count but allow them to figure out new ways to count on their own. Students usually find that when the collections get bigger, they may need to start counting by 10's or even 5's. You can print and use this ten frame mat to help them with their counting!
Once your child has counted their collection, ask them to draw you a picture of how they counted it and write the number of objects they counted.
This video helps explain counting collections and the awesome learning that can come from doing them at home!
