"Read to Self” is a part of our daily routine in kindergarten and we believe that this part of our day helps students build independence and a love of reading! It may be helpful to start this routine at home as a part of your child’s school day.
We spend the first few weeks of school building student’s stamina to be able to independently do read to self for longer periods of time! We start with just a few minutes at a time and then build up to doing read to self for 20 minutes at a time each day. During read to self, students can read any books you have at home that interest them or the books we sent home in their book bag.
Once small groups begin, your child will also receive small-group reading instruction for 20 minutes, twice a week.
I encourage you to also take time during the week to read a book to your child and use a few of the reading questions from below to help them practice their comprehension skills!
